'To be honest': Anthony Gordon slams 'ridiculous' rule that saw him receive a red card on Saturday

Newcastle United are back in action at St James' Park tomorrow night as they take on Anthony Gordon's former club Everton - Kick-off is at 7:30pm live on TNT Sport.

Anthony Gordon would love nothing more than to have a crack at his old club after the way things went down before he left, but thanks to a silly mistake on Saturday in the closing stages of the 4-3 win over West Ham, the newly-capped England star will now miss out.

After taking one for the team by holding back Mohammed Kudus who had set off on another dangerous run, Gordon was given his first yellow card of the game on Saturday. Then, seconds after TNT Sport awarded him the Player of the Match accolade, Gordon kicked the ball away after West Ham were awarded a free-kick, and thanks to the rules of the game, the referee had to show him a yellow card which meant that his game got cut short.

It wasn't even a kick in anger, just a slight tap but the rules are clear and he had to be carded, but while Gordon sees why he was sent off, he clearly doesn't agree with it.

In a quote run by The Mirror, Gordon called the rule 'ridiculous' and thinks he might have got away with it if the ref had realised beforehand that he'd already been booked.

“I tapped the ball away. How far you want to look into that... it's incredible really,” he said. “To get sent off for tapping a ball five yards. To be honest with you, I only think he booked me because he didn't know he'd booked me before. That's not good enough to be honest with you.

“I don't want to complain about referees because they have a job to do. They are the rules so he's sticking to the rules and laws of the game but it's ridiculous really.”

Anthony Gordon will serve a one-match suspension

Gordon went into the game on Saturday on eight yellow cards, and picking up 10 in a season hands you a two-match ban, fortunately, if you pick up two in one game like Gordon did, the second one doesn't count towards your total which means Gordon will only serve a one-game suspension.

This now means Harvey Barnes will likely get his chance to shine on Tuesday night after a breathtaking cameo against West Ham where the winger leveled things up before bagging the winner.

We're still awaiting news on Miguel Almiron and Tino Livramento, but neither are expected to be fit enough to face Everton, with rumours going around that Miggy's injury is also a bad one, although hopefully not as bad as Jamaal Lascelles' who now misses the next 6-9 months after needed ACL surgery.
