Newcastle United's spectacular win over West Ham United on Saturday came at a cost as three Newcastle players succumbed to injury during the game.
The curse that has followed Newcastle around this season struck again yesterday as three more players were added to the Magpies' injury list during the game at St James' Park.
Jamaal Lascelles, Tino Livramento and Miguel Almiron all picked up injuries during the game with Almiron and Lascelles both only lasting around 10 minutes each.
Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles' injury happened in the opening 10 minutes of the game and looked like it could be a bad one as confirmed by Eddie Howe in the post-match interview with NUFC TV.
Lascelles was treated on the pitch then went off only to try to run off the injury on the sideline before re-entering the field of play where he lasted another minute or so before being hooked for Emil Krafth.
Now, the club has revealed the extent of the injury and Jamaal Lascelles is set to undergo surgery on a torn ACL just like Sven Botman, meaning that we now have two central defenders who will be unavailable for the rest of this calendar year.
"Newcastle United can confirm that club captain Jamaal Lascelles suffered a rupture to the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s victory over West Ham United.
"After seeing a specialist consultant, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for 6-9 months.
"Everyone at #NUFC extends their best wishes to Jamaal for a full and speedy recovery"
Questions need to be asked of our medical team again. Allowing Lascelles to try and play on with such a serious injury is just madness. How could they not have spotted the seriousness of the injury given that we already have a player suffering with the exact same injury?
Newcastle are now even more desperate for new defenders in the summer. We already needed to buy a new centre-back before Sven Botman went under the knife, and now with him and Lascelles out for the rest of the year, Eddie Howe may have to use the bulk of his transfer budget on repairing the damage.
Jamaal Lascelles has just signed a new contract at the club and will now spend the majority of his new deal sidelined with injury.
Our big fear now is that Paul Dummett gets handed a new deal after announcing he would leave the club at the end of the season and Eddie Howe goes full Alan Pardew and hails him as a new signing.
