Newcastle United are scrambling to salvage their transfer window after missing out on Marc Guehi following a month-long pursuit.

It took until Transfer Deadline Day for Crystal Palace to stop pissing about and give Newcastle a definitive answer. They'd been playing us all along, giving us hope that a deal for Marc Guehi could be done and then shifting the goalposts at the last second.

Steve Parish knew what he was doing and by keeping us focused on that one deal we fell behind when it came to other targets.

Now, with just a few hours to go, Paul Mitchell is flapping and desperate to bring in his first signing as sporting director and TalkSPORT claim that it could be a winger they bring in.

Newcastle are working on a deal for Anthony Elanga

Alex Crook has posted on X that Newcastle are now working on a 'big money' move for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga which may be the mystery signing Luke Edwards alluded to.

Elanga has been on Newcastle's radar all summer and at one point was identified as a top target for the Magpies.

We expected that Newcastle would only acquire a winger if Miguel Almiron had moved on but it seems that now everything has changed.

Elanga is possibly a better signing than Guehi would have been

As long as we aren't forced to overpay as we were about to for Marc Guehi, Elanga could end up being a better signing.

He plays in a position we were more desperate to fill in our opinion. A centre-back to succeed Fabian Schar is a necessity but we can wait, someone to replace Miggy and Jacob Murphy seemed much more pressing.

Elanga tortured us last season and made Dan Burn look like a statue as the 22-year-old raced past him at high speed on several occasions.

The Swede is exactly what we need on the right and his signing could lift the mood massively.
