Newcastle United are crawling towards the transfer deadline empty handed after it became official that the Marc Guehi deal is off.

Oliver Glasner confirmed in his press conference today that Marc Guehi is staying at Crystal Palace ending Newcastle's only real hope of bringing in a player to improve the first-team.

After messing about for a month on one player, while the Crystal Palace chairman operated in bad faith, stringing Paul Mitchell along knowing he was never going to sell, Newcastle have no time now to do anything else.

Or do they? The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has offered some small hope that something could still happen before tonight's deadline.

Luke Edwards says Newcastle are working on a deal

Posting on X this afternoon that there's a chance that a deal gets done today, Edwards stopped short of offering any details.

Let's be honest though, it's probably going to be James Trafford, another goalkeeper, which, if we don't move on Odysseas Vlachodmios and/or Martin Dubravka will really just hammer home how absolutely ridiculous this transfer window has been.

We'd be left with six goalkeepers in the squad, three of which will have joined this summer.

Is this the worst transfer window so far?

Newcastle's priorities going into the window were a right-sided central defender and a right winger, instead, we just went out and brought in goalkeepers.

We sold a right winger who is arguably better than the two we have, or at least has the potential to be.

Unless this mystery deal that Edwards has hinted at produces a player who can fit into either of those aforementioned positions, this may actually be a worse window than January when we did no business at all.
