The first North East derby of the season is creeping up, with Sunderland set to host Newcastle United in a fortnight's time.

The last time the two sides met was in the FA Cup a couple of years ago, where the Magpies romped to a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

With fans hoping to transform the stadium for Newcastle's arrival in two weeks, we assume they don't mean in the same way as they did last time when they turned the away end bar into a black and white haven.

This time it's the supporters group, This Is Wearside, who are hoping to create the best flag display the club has seen ... since the one they created for the last derby.

We'll just ignore the fact that the Lambton Worm is a County Durham tale, not a Sunderland one, eh?

Sunderland are planning their 'best ever' flag display for the upcoming derby

Sunderland have created a few decent flags and tifo displays in the past to give credit where it's due. Although quite often they've fallen short of the gold standard set by Wor Flags at St James' Park.

In fairness, Wor Flags have a huge advantage when it comes to creating breathtaking displays in that our stadium is always full, so you can practically guarantee there'll be someone in the seat to hoist the flags to make the display work.

This is probably why Sunderland have chosen the derby to do this, as they're more likely to have a capacity crowd available.

Let the Flag wars commence

Sunderland staged an impressive comeback against Bournemouth on Saturday, bumping them up to fourth place in the Premier League and still, looking at the crowd, you could see pink seats everywhere. You're fourth in the Premier League, you couldn't get a shift off from Nissan to go to the match?

All jokes aside, we are genuinely looking forward to seeing what the Sunderland fans come up with as they claim their display will incorporate images that will reference a rivalry that dates back to the Civil War, according to the BBC.

Let's see what they create, and then we'll see how Wor Flags responds next year.
