Newcastle United are backed by the wealthiest owners in football but looking at their transfer activity over the last two years you'd have no idea they could potentially have access to unending wealth.
The Saudi PIF's vast wealth is only expanding, and while they would be happy to share some of that cash with Newcastle United, Premier League and UEFA regulations make it nigh-on impossible.
However, the cracks are starting to show, and the Associated Party Transaction rules are on their last legs, which could, hopefully, have a knock-on effect on the Profit and Sustainability Rules, which most people agree is ruining the game.
There's a massive fear that Newcastle would simply 'buy success' should the shackles come off, and while we agree that's a possibility, it's nothing new in the game either.
We don't really want to have that asterisk over our success, but at the same time, a part of us would love it to happen just to stick it to the other clubs in the league. However, I'm sure, overall, most Newcastle fans would like us to do it properly.
It's just not possible to do at all under the current rules as they are clearly designed to keep the precious six big earners locked in their own little playpen, but if they opened it up, it wouldn't just be Newcastle who would benefit. Yes, we'd have the most resources, but they could find a way to cap it that doesn't take us off at the knee but still lets us spend way more than we're allowed to now.
Former Liverpool star and a professional thorn in the side of Newcastle United, Stan Collymore, has voiced his concerns, and taking our NUFC specs off, he's probably got the point, but putting their glasses back on again... why can't we spend the money our owners can afford?
Collymore told Caught Offside that it would all become about money ... we've got news for you, Stan. The game has been all about money since the Premier League started!
“What we all really want is to say that there is some financial regulation and transparency that allows all clubs to be able to spend a really good healthy amount to enable them to build squads and benefit from really good recruitment. We don’t want to stop upwardly mobile clubs from doing that but all we’re really going to end up with in 10 years time now is Newcastle outspending anybody.
“Once they get the green light, they’ll blow everybody else out of the water. It would be ludicrous to say that Newcastle United - that haven’t won a trophy since the 1950s - win a sixth consecutive Premier League and it’s all because of great recruitment.
“It won’t be, because it will just be the money that gets them there - and we don’t want the Premier League to be just about money. At the moment there is decreasing value in every trophy that a club wins, and that is in proportion to how much that club spends.”
