Over the weekend it was reported that Manchester United were keen on signing Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer.

We doubt that if a bid were to come in for the Newcastle academy graduate, it would be well below the £50 million that was mooted when Longstaff first burst onto the scene at Newcastle, and Man United was said to be keen.

The rumours have persisted now to the point where TeamTalk have addressed what's likely to happen in the summer, and it's not good news for Man United.

They believe that Sean Longstaff would prefer to remain at Newcastle, but the club are said to have different ideas.

Manchester United want Sean Longstaff this summer

Longstaff did recently sign a new deal at Newcastle, but it wasn't so much about keeping him at the club as it was making sure the club got something when he does move.

Sean Longstaff managed to negotiate staying at the club beyond the January window with Newcastle gunning for silverware again. Despite barely featuring for Eddie Howe, Longstaff was retained and given the opportunity to lift silverware with his beloved club before he departed.

That has now happened after the Magpies were crowned League Cup champions last week, and the expectation is that the club will try and cash in on Longstaff in the summer with him being a 'pure profit' sale after rising through the academy.

Sean Longstaff wants to stay at Newcastle

TeamTalk does acknowledge that Newcastle will try and move Longstaff on this summer, having only offered him his latest contract extension as a way of preserving his value and not losing him on a free.

It's hardly surprising that Longstaff's preference would be to stay at Newcastle given it's where his career started and is the club he supported as a boy, but we'd be very surprised if he manages to negotiate another stay of execution.

We're sceptical of the reports that Manchester United want him, but he's certainly more of a realistic target for them than Alexander Isak, which Gary Neville has been trying to claim as a realistic option lately.
