Report says £45m Newcastle United star has release clause in contract
Ross Wilson got started as Newcastle United's latest sporting director this week and the former Nottingham Forest and Rangers man will have plenty to keep him busy.
There are several stars who the club feel could do with new contracts in a bid to prevent a repeat of this summer's Alexander Isak shenanigans.
A report in iNews today has posed the question as to whether the Magpies will resort to using 'release clauses' in high-profile players' contracts to get them to sign a new deal.
It's not a new concept to the Magpies, who famously inserted a £100 million release clause in Bruno Guimaraes' last contract.
Anthony Gordon has a release clause in his contract
Newcastle were very clever with that release clause; however, they made it active for just one month before the PSR reporting deadline, making it highly unlikely that any club would be able to afford to make the deal happen.
The report also claims that when Anthony Gordon signed his latest contract in 2024, there was a release clause inserted into that deal, too.
While they are light on the details, they claim the £45 million former Everton man's clause is similar in value to the one that was given to Bruno Guimaraes.
Anthony Gordon is getting back to his best levels
There had been a lot of speculation over Gordon's future last summer when it was reported that the Magpies had entertained the idea of letting him leave for Liverpool in order to comply with PSR before switching tack and selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
This summer was a lot quieter when it came to Gordon's future. Probably to do with the fact that Gordon was way off his usual high level last season.
He's started this campaign much brighter, but for us, he still needs to work on his final ball, whether that be a pass, a cross or a shot. So far this season, his end output has been lacking.
