I honestly don't know where to begin. Newcastle United just can not catch a break this season.

In the 3-0 win over Sunderland, a day that brought Geordies unbridled joy, there was, as there always has been this season, a huge downside and that was that Joelinton picked up yet another injury - his third of the season.

This latest injury was expected to keep the £40million ex-Hoffenheim star out of action for around six weeks which, given Newcastle's extremely depleted squad is a huge blow.

Joelinton could be out for the season

Now, though, ESPN Brazil understands that the injury is worse than first feared and could require surgery.

J7 could require surgery on his latest injury to prevent reoccurrence

Should that be the case then Joelinton can write off his season as recovery from surgery would take around four months.

"Only after performing new exams, the medical department of Newcastle evaluated that the best option for Brazilians is to undergo surgery so as not to run the risk of the problem reoccurring.

"With that, the player would have to go through another four months of recovery, thus losing the end of the season."

We have some hope that the story may not be true

What we will say here is that this report coming out of Brazil rather than English media gives us a slight bit of hope, even if it is coming from a reputable outlet.

As we know from the events at the weekend, Joelinton is still in Newcastle so it's not as if he's back home seeing doctors there.

It's still a worry though, in fact, it's a huge worry when you consider Sean Longstaff's recent form. What a season, eh?
