Newcastle United are ready to battle Atletico Madrid for the signature of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Georgian international has garnered interest from clubs all over Europe. Still, inews has reported that the Magpies have a concrete interest in the 23-year-old and have scouted him on several occasions.

However, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly looking to find a replacement for Jan Oblak who turned 31 in January.

It is thought that it would take one of the clubs activating his £88million release clause for Valencia to consider letting him go.

Newcastle are in the market for a new goalkeeper

It is no surprise to see that Newcastle have been looking at new goalkeeping options. The Magpies have been without first-choice keeper Nick Pope since he badly dislocated his shoulder in a November game against Manchester United at St James' Park.

Since then, Martin Dubravka has taken the reigns as the starting keeper with Loris Karius making a sole appearance in a 4-0 defeat away at Arsenal.

Karius will be leaving the club at the end of the season and there is interest in Dubravka from Saudi Arabia.

It makes sense that Newcastle are after a young keeper who can eventually take the reigns from Pope when the time comes.

Mamardashvili can be the goalkeeper that takes us to the next decade.

I say that unironically, the lad is only 23 and already has bags of experience.

Since joining Valencia from FC Locomotive in 2021, he has made 96 appearances in all competitions keeping 30 clean sheets.

He is also the Georgian national team's starting goalkeeper and has already made 15 appearances for his country since debuting in September 2021.
