Report claims Newcastle United are working on deal for £10m Premier League winger with ties to club

Newcastle United are pushing on with their summer transfer plans with a right winger a high priority for the Magpies.

The right-wing was already a problem area for Newcastle, but then in January, they sold one of their two recognised right-sided wingers in Miguel Almiron, leaving just Jacob Murphy as a natural fit for the position for the remainder of the season.

Fortunately, Murphy has discovered his form at the right time, but whether that will be sustainable enough to carry him through the rest of the season remains to be seen.

Newcastle have plenty of players on their shortlist already, but we're confident we don't even know the half of them so far.

Marcus Tavernier could prove to be the cost-effective option for Newcastle United this summer

The Boot Room are now reporting that Newcastle have stepped up their interest in Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier who cost the Cherries just £10 million in 2022.

Tavernier was briefly on the books at Newcastle as a youth before switching to Middlesbrough while his brother James remained on Tyneside.

Newcastle's interest in Tavernier is nothing new, but it sounds as if he's getting bumped up the club's list of potential targets, and we're sure that Tavernier would relish a return home.

Bryan Mbeumo is likely Newcastle's priority for right-wing

We expect that Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is probably still top of the pile, but the likes of PSV's Johan Bakayoko will be a close second, and now it seems Tavernier could be climbing into the top options.

Tavernier's signing wouldn't exactly get the fans singing in the streets, but he could be a solid and potentially cost-effective addition with the squad in desperate need of an overhaul this summer.

So many players are needed, but PSR is still going to be in the way, meaning it's unlikely that the Magpies are going to make any big money signings, rather a series of lower-cost purchases. We just hope it's not a case of quantity over quality as that would end up being a backward step for the club. Free transfers may be the way to go this summer - Jonathan David, anyone?
