This morning Eddie Howe told the press that Fabian Schar would likely not play again this season after picking up a hamstring injury in the game against Sheffield United.

The Swiss defender has not missed a Premier League game all season. Even when picking up knocks that looked set to keep him out of games, the 32-year-old has always managed to shake them off in time to be available for selection.

With just four games left of the season, that streak is set to come to an end with Eddie Howe not just ruling out Schar from tomorrow's game, but suggesting that we'll not see him again this season.

However, Schar, who we've dubbed The Toonminator for being unstoppable, has told Swiss media that he feels like his injury has been exaggerated.

You just can't keep The Toonminator down

A post on X from Matt Law has quoted Schar's words to the Swiss press and it appears that he is determined to be back in action this season.

“In my opinion it's not that bad and I fully expect to still play for Newcastle this season. Accordingly, I have no worries at all when it comes to the European Championships,”

We know how Eddie Howe often plays it fast and loose with player return dates. We don't know if this is a deliberate thing to keep the opposition guessing, or if he is just being fed duff information from our medical team, but it something isn't adding up.

It could be time for Alex Murphy to step up

It's clear that Schar is determined to go to Euro 2024 with Switzerland, although he's been told that his place will be back-up rather than a starter.

As far as Newcastle goes, we'll be relying on full-backs to fill in at centre-back for the rest of the season, or maybe calling up young Alex Murphy to play at centre-back. He has done well in his few appearances so far under Eddie Howe so it would be a good time for him to step up.

One thing is for certain, we won't be seeing Fabian Schar tomorrow, but beyond that is anyone's guess.
