Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi but faces tough competition from Premier League rivals Aston Villa, according to reports.

The French midfielder was left out of Didier Deschamps' Euro 2024 squad despite having an impressive season for Lazio where he made 33 appearances in Serie A and played eight times in the UEFA Champions League.

He has also made eight appearances for the French national side.

After joining on an initial loan, his performances have earned him a permanent move to Italy from Marseille, but reports suggest that he could depart as quickly as he arrived with interest from the Premier League.

There have been reports that the 25-year-old has fallen out with former Lazio head coach Igor Tudor which means that Guendouzi could move away from the club.

Newcastle look to improve their midfield

The Magpies have a great starting midfield with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali who is set to return from suspension at the end of August.

However, Newcastle's midfield depth is lacking, especially with the departure of Elliot Anderson who joined Nottingham Forest for £35million late last month.

Other options are Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Lewis Miley but the latter two have struggled with a slew of injuries which has kept them out of the side for an extended time.

Guendouzi wouldn't be a player who started every game but would give the Magpies a great deal of quality in their options off the bench.

Aston Villa hold the upper hand for Guendouzi

Despite Newcastle's interest it Aston Villa are more likely to land the Frenchman at the moment, according to La Lazio Siamo Noi.

Villa boss Unai Emery has a keen interest in Guendouzi after coaching him during his time at Arsenal where he signed him as a youngster.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Villa could land him for £21m if the interest was there.

Newcastle are sure to be monitoring his situation but may be forced to pay up to £27m for his services.
