Canada striker Jonathan David is set to leave Lille this summer when his contract expires and that's likely to spark a huge battle from clubs all over Europe for his signature.

Newcastle United have been heavily reported as being one such club keen to snap up the 25-year-old striker on a free.

It's believed Jonathan David's wage demands are said to be around £150,000-a-week which is doable for the Magpies, but we've always maintained that convincing him to join Newcastle to play second-fiddle to Alexander Isak will be our biggest challenge.

However, that may not be true after David recently spoke about his future ahead of his inevitable summer switch.

Jonathan David has hinted at his next move in a recent interview

Speaking on the It's Called Soccer podcast, Jonathan David has dropped the biggest hint yet over his next destination.

“I think I can adapt to every league. Every league has its differences. The Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than all of the other leagues. But for me, I grew up watching a lot of La Liga and for me, that would be my preferred league. That is the league that I enjoyed watching the most so one day I would like to play there.

"Will that happen? I don’t know. We’ll see what the future takes us”

Newcastle aren't out of the race but that's a big blow

Not being a Spanish club may now be a bigger hurdle than convincing him to play second to Isak, but that last sentence does offer a glimmer of hope.

Also, who's to say that he can't have a season or two in the Premier League and then move to La Liga?

It's not over in the battle for the man who has 23 goals and 10 assists in 41 games this season. Let's just hope he has a thing for three-handled trophies and bridges. We can still win this race.
