Newcastle United target Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to sign with Premier League side Liverpool, according to reports.

The Georgian international was heavily linked with a move to the Magpies earlier in the summer and impressed for his national side at this year's European Championships.

Local press had reported that Mamardashvili caught the eye of Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe thanks to his performances in La Liga where he kept 13 clean sheets in 37 games, only three other goalkeepers had more shutouts in the league last season.

Newcastle have since gone on to sign two new goalkeepers, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos while Loris Karius was released and Martin Dubravka could leave this summer.

Giorgi Mamardashvili set to replace Allison at Liverpool

As reported by football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Mamardashvili with Valencia set to receive around £35million from the deal.

However, the 23-year-old is keen on spending some time out on loan elsewhere before becoming the Reds first choice keeper.

Romano says that ideally, Mamardashvili would spend "one or two years elsewhere on loan"

Fellow Premier League side Bournemouth are interested in the Georgian then he would become Liverpool's top keeper once Allison left.

Are Newcastle in the market for a new goalkeeper?

The agents of both clubs are in Valencia now to broker a deal between the two clubs so as it stands no concrete agreement has been made yet.

If they wanted to, Newcastle still have time to hijack the deal but it seems unlikely given they currently have five goalkeepers on their books.

Dubravka could be leaving this summer with reported interest from around Europe and the Middle East.

Last month there were rumours that Ruddy could be loaned out to Championship side Blackburn.
