Speculation around Kieran Trippier's Newcastle United future has followed the former England right-back around like a bad smell for the past year.

A mooted move to Bayern Munich last January never materialised and then the summer was littered with speculation around a move away from Tyneside as issues in Trippier's personal life surfaced.

At one point, it looked like the right-back was off to Saudi Arabia with Trippier teasing fans on social media. Ultimately, he remained on Tyneside with a January move looking very likely.

As January rolled round, Trippier had found himself back in the first team and performing well and as such, Eddie Howe's reluctance to let Trippier leave grew even stronger.

Kieran Trippier will stay and fight the cause with Newcastle

Galatasary made an 11th-hour bid for Kieran Trippier

The media were still claiming that Trippier was seeking an exit from Newcastle but wasn't actively pushing it, and that was all that Howe needed to keep him around.

However, Turkish side Galatasaray had their eye on Trippier, and their transfer window ran over a week longer than the English window.

The Northern Echo are now reporting that Galatasaray made their move on deadline day and offered Newcastle £2.5 million for the 34-year-old, which was instantly rejected.

Trippier opted to stay at Newcastle to help them achieve their goals this season

While the amount offered to Newcastle was peanuts, the feeling was that the Turkish giants were willing to offer Trippier a lucrative three-year deal. Still, with a cup final on the horizon and the club once again chasing Europe, Trippier opted to remain on Tyneside.

This now means that the former Atletico Madrid man will remain at Newcastle until at least the summer, where the Magpies may move to cash in.

However, with our defence already depleted, we may convince him to stick around until his contract expires in 2026.
