Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron's proposed transfer to Charlotte FC has officially collapsed.

The MLS side entered negotiations with The Magpies over a potential move for the Paraguayan international to return to the league after five years away.

Almiron's contract doesn't run out until 2026, so Charlotte would've needed to pay a large sum of money to have the player leave.

Initially, signs suggested that a deal could be struck between the two sides but that quickly disappeared after a breakdown in talks.

A wage dispute led to a breakdown in talks between Newcastle United and Charlotte FC

According to Chris Waugh of The Athletic, the issue was actually on Almiron's side.

Newcastle had a verbal agreement with Charlotte but the deal ended up collapsing after Almiron and his agent demanded higher wages.

Charlotte responded by lowering their offer to £7million, a figure that was just too low for Eddie Howe's side.

It is also thought that Almiron's former club, Atlanta United hold a sell-on clause so the fee Newcastle would've received for the 30-year-old was nowhere near what they could get for him.

Miguel Almiron is set to stay at Newcastle United this season

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a fan of Almoron and still sees him as an important player in his side.

Despite that, the club were open to selling the player but only if the price was right.

With the MLS transfer window now closed, any dream of returning to North America is gone for Almiron who joined the club in January 2019.

Almiron had a poor time in front of goal last season, netting just three times in 33 Premier League appearances.
