Newcastle United edge closer to bringing in new sporting director from Premier League rival
Newcastle United have been working to recruit a new sporting director since the unexpected and sudden resignation of Paul Mitchell.
The former Monaco man left Newcastle in the mire when he announced he'd be leaving the club in the middle of the summer transfer window, meaning that once again, Newcastle would be rudderless as they try to negotiate deals in the off-season.
As much as we aren't sad to see Mitchell go - he clearly wasn't a good fit for the club - we would have liked for him to have at least stuck around for the window to ease the pressure on Eddie Howe, but the fact that he chose to leave when he did speaks volumes.
Since his departure, the Magpies have been holding interviews and trying to find the right person to take over, and The Athletic are reporting that the Magpies may have found their man.
Newcastle United want Ross Wilson from Nottingham Forest
Identified as an early favourite for the role, Nottingham Forest's Ross Wilson looks to be the candidate the Newcastle board have their eyes on.
Wilson is currently the chief football officer at Nottingham Forest and is someone Newcastle have had their eye on for a long time, according to the report, which claims the PIF had their eyes on Wilson when he was at Rangers between 2019 and 2023.
No approach has been made by Newcastle as yet, and there will be a lot to work out in terms of getting him out of Nottingham Forest and into his position at Newcastle. Hopefully, it won't be as messy as Dan Ashworth's transition to Manchester United.
The Newcastle United boardroom is a mess right now
Newcastle have been building up a team for the new sporting director to work with, having promoted Jack Ross and hired Sudarshan Gopaladesikan.
Meanwhile, the search continues for a new CEO with Darren Eales still serving his notice after taking the decision to step down for health reasons last year.
The current frontrunner for that position is thought to be David Hopkinson, who recently worked at Real Madrid.
With all of this going on in the background, is it any wonder we are finding it so hard to sign players?
