Newcastle United have made a signing behind the scenes as Sudarshan Gopaladesikan joins the club as a technical director.

In an announcement put out by the club at 5:30 pm today, 'Suds' was announced as a new technical director after leaving Serie A side Atalanta.

Suds will be in charge of the footballing data, working alongside Eddie Howe and the coaching staff to help analyse all of the data gathered by the club.

He will report to the new sporting director, who is yet to be revealed after Paul Mitchell's departure.

Newcastle don't have a sporting director in place but keep adding to the list of the next hire's subordinates

Suds is the second staff member to take up a position working under the sporting director, which we find a little odd. Surely we recruit the sporting director first, and then have him be involved in the shaping of his team?

That's not throwing shade at Suds by any means. We're sure he was the right man for the job, and the new sporting director, whoever that may be, will be happy with the appointment; it just seems a bit backwards.

Although with the way our off-field affairs are being run, we're hardly surprised.

Suds was the Head of Sports Data Science at Benfica before moving to Atalanta

Suds comes in with a wealth of experience, having spent five years at Benfica before his move to Atalanta. Having joined the Magpies, he said he was honoured to have joined Newcastle.

"I'm delighted and honoured to be joining Newcastle United as Technical Director. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with clubs that have deeply passionate fanbases, and Newcastle stands out for its unique connection between the team, the city and its supporters.

"I'm excited to work alongside the club's talented staff to identify what helps give us a competitive edge. Most of all, I'm looking forward to experiencing the incredible matchday atmosphere at St. James' Park and being part of this proud football family and community."
