Things can change pretty quickly in the world of football after reports surfaced yesterday that Anthony Gordon was frustrated with the time it has taken Newcastle United to agree to his terms for a new deal.
The £45 million winger came back from England duty to be told he'd be offered a lucrative new contract after a fantastic season and after almost being offered up as a PSR sacrifice before Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold to make up the shortfall.
However, Gordon's demands were that he would become the highest-paid player at the club which Newcastle weren't willing to offer.
This season, Gordon's form has been such that he's lucky to be in talks over a new deal at all.
Now, The Telegraph's Luke Edwards who wrote a huge deep dive on Anthony Gordon's poor start to the season, has corroborated something in the Daily Mail which suggests a breakthrough is near.
"UPDATED Anthony Gordon is on the brink of signing new contract after lowering wage demands as per @CraigHope_DM. Will not become the club’s top earner which was initial demand but significant pay rise on offer. That’s one issue resolved. Needs to repay faith shown in him as it’s been a distraction #NUFC"
Edwards closed off his post on X by saying that talks over a new deal have been a distraction for Gordon, so it seems that the sooner we get this tied up, the sooner Gordon can go back to being the menace he was last season.
After all the speculation around Gordon and a move to Liverpool, it is good to see that the 23-year-old is willing to commit his future to Newcastle.
Now we just need him to get his head back on straight, stop flouncing around on the pitch and get to work.
Tomorrow's game against Manchester City will see Gordon go up against speed merchant Kyle Walker so we'll need him at his best. It's the perfect time for him to show up.
