Newcastle United had threatened to walk away from the deal to bring Crystal Palace defender Mark Guehi to St James' Park if no advancement was made by the weekend.

Despite plenty of reports this week suggesting that things were edging towards a resolution, Marc Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player.

When asked on Friday about Guehi, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said he was expecting him to captain the side against West Ham on Saturday.

That has now been confirmed to be the case after Palace released their team sheet for this afternoon's Premier League clash.

Guehi is playing for Palace this afternoon

This means that Newcastle are clearly no further forward than they were last week when Guehi captained the side in their first game of the season.

If things were edging closer then you'd expect Palace to give Newcastle the courtesy of not putting Guehi in the side and risking an injury, but clearly they're still treating him as if he's their player for the foreseeable future.

They're well entitled to do that, we're not having a pop at Crystal Palace here, but just what is going on? Where's the line?

Making no more signings before the end of the window will not go down well

Newcastle are already being drawn in to overpay for Guehi, and now it looks like we're going to be made to wait until Friday to actually sign him, if they let him go at all.

As far as alternatives go, we've already reported that two names can be scratched off the list.

Not to mention the fact that there has been absolutely zero attempts made to land a right-winger. If Newcastle don't get their finger out, there's going to be quite the atmosphere in St James' Park next Sunday when Tottenham come to visit - and not in a good way.
