Newcastle United are still negotiating with Crystal Palace over a move for centre-back Marc Guehi despite threatening to walk away if there was no movement by the weekend.

The weekend is now here and we don't seem to be any further forward with Palace boss Oliver Glasner saying he expects Guehi to lead Palace out as Captain at Selhurst Park today against West Ham.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are looking elsewhere in case the deal for Guehi falls through or it gets to a point where they have to walk away.

However, the shortlist just got a little bit shorter as one target high on the list has suffered an achilles injury which could keep him out of action for two months.

Andreas Christensen is expected to be out for two months

Spanish outlet Sport has reported that Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has picked up an achilles injury which will likely scupper any chance of a move in the last week of the window.

Both Newcastle and Tottenham were interested in the former Chelsea man with recent reports claiming he could be let go from Barcelona for as little as £23 million.

Newcastle had been interested in Christensen last summer, too, so it likely that he would have been quite high on the list of contingency plans should the Guehi bid fail.

Christensen and Edmond Tapsoba look to be off the table

Now with Christensen injured and Edmund Taposoba saying he wants to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, the Magpies' options are dwindling ... as is the time to get a deal done.

Should Oliver Glasner name a side without Marc Guehi in today then we'll be taking that as a sign that the deal is close, but we expect he will lead the side out as captain as planned.

The deal might as well go into another week, it seems like we're going for a Guinness world record.
