Newcastle United lost out on the signing of Tosin Adarabioyo at the weekend despite recent claims that his move to Tyneside was a done deal.

Adarabioyo has reportedly agreed to join Chelsea over Newcastle with a medical booked for the defender ahead of the move to Stamford Bridge.

That has now cast a shadow of doubt over Newcastle's acquisition of Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth. Both Kelly and Tosin were supposed to be Newcastle-bound after their contracts expired at Bournemouth and Fulham respectively before the latter's U-turn.

However, Football Insider are claiming that Newcastle aren't sweating over Kelly's decision.

Lloyd Kelly is still looking likely to sign for Newcastle

Club insiders are 'very confident' that Kelly will sign for Newcastle

Football Insider are claiming that sources inside the club are saying that they are 'very confident' that the deal for Lloyd Kelly will go ahead without a hitch.

There has so far been no reports of any other clubs looking to hijack the deal for Kelly, so all signs are pointing towards the 25-year-old teaming up with Eddie Howe for a second time this summer.

If we had to choose one out of Kelly and Adarabioyo, we'd say that Kelly just edges it based on our current needs. Kelly can cover at left-back as well as centre-back which is a position that needs attention.

Kelly's injury record of late is pure nightmare fuel

That being said, Kelly's injury record last season is a cause for concern as he missed 17 games for The Cherries with three separate injuries.

He missed 15 games in 2022/23 too due to two separate ankle injuries, so this is definitely a worry.

The positive is that Kelly is a free transfer making it a fairly low-risk move on Howe's part.
