Newcastle United's first team may not look any different so far this summer, but the academy is certainly improving.

Highly-rated Spanish youngster Antonio Cordero was announced by the club earlier this week as a new arrival coming at the start of July.

Georgian wonderkid Vakhtang Salia is also due to join Newcastle from Dinamo Tbilisi when he turns 18 on 30th August, joining recent signings Miodrag Pivas and Baran Yildiz.

Now it looks as though another youngster is on the way to the Magpies academy in time for next season.

Oliver Goodbrand will soon sign for Newcastle United following a medical

As reported by Craig Hope, Rangers youngster Oliver Goodbrand is due on Tyneside for a medical ahead of a switch from Ibrox.

The 16-year-old left-back was coveted by other players in Europe, but it looks as though Newcastle have won the race for the highly-rated Scotsman.

Goodbrand made it as far as breaking into the Rangers B team at the age of 15, and Newcastle have been keeping an eye on him for a while.

The Daily Record called it back in April

The Daily Record reported on Newcastle's interest back in April, suggesting that the youngster would turn his back on Rangers and, rather than sign a professional deal with the Scottish Premier League giants, he'd move south of the border to St James' Park.

And so it has come to pass with Goodbrand on his way to Tyneside where he'll be placed into the academy next season.

If only we were half as good at signing first-team players as we are at finding and bringing in youngsters.
