There's no way we can hail this transfer window a success if Newcastle United don't sign a new winger which is looking inevitable at this point.

A right-winger has been on many Newcastle fans' wish list for a while now with our only real options down that flank both hangovers from the Mike Ashley days in Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.

The two have fought like beavers for the club, we can never fault them for their commitment and effort, but their ability is lacking, at least their ability to perform consistently is.

With that in mind, when you see Liverpool about to land a winger who has been on Newcastle's wanted list for two summers now, it does sting, especially when he's only costing them £10.9 million.

Federico Chiesa is Liverpool-bound

Federico Chiesa was tracked all of last summer and his name kept popping up again in this window as a potential target for Newcastle.

For us, it was a no-brainer even when it was touted that he could be available for £21 million, but Liverpool are about to pick him up for under £11 million now while we don't look to be bringing in anybody.

On the flip side, the transfer window for Newcastle hasn't been a complete disaster, and this Chiesa update proves why.

Newcastle's window hasn't been a complete disaster despite how it feels

One of Newcastle's main tasks this summer after missing out on Europe, was to keep hold of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon with the latter being linked to Liverpool for much of the window after Newcastle stupidly put the feelers out to Liverpool over a move when in PSR panic mode.

With the Reds now poised to sign Chiesa, that will mean that Liverpool's interest in Gordon is now officially over and there'll be no nasty surprises for Newcastle in the next couple of days.

Keeping hold of that trio, while not as exciting as bringing in a big-name player, is just as important. We still won't hail this window as a success, even if we pick up Marc Guehi before Friday, but in truth, it's nowhere near as bad as it feels like it is.
