There's a lot of talk about Alexander Isak heading to Liverpool after reports surfaced that the Premier League champions approached Newcastle United with a proposal on Tuesday.

While the approach hasn't been labelled as a 'bid', it is believed that Liverpool made it clear to Newcastle that they would be willing to part with £120 million to make a deal for the Sweden international.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Newcastle's stance has always been, and remains, that Alexander Isak is not for sale. Indeed, the £120 million proposal is still £30 million shy of what Newcastle had hinted it would take to even enter talks for the 25-year-old.

Less than 24 hours on from the initial approach, Liverpool don't seem to be going away, despite suggestions that they would instead turn their attention to Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike in a bid to beat Newcastle to the Frenchman's signature.

John Aldridge doesn't believe Newcastle will cave in to Liverpool's demands

Liverpool can covet Isak all they want, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything will happen, and now former Liverpool star John Aldridge has had his say. Aldridge won the league title and FA Cup with Liverpool in the late 80s, and he's told BetBrain (via GOAL) that he doesn't see Newcastle parting with their star man.

“If the club are going to replace Darwin Nunez, who are they going to bring in? Will Florian Wirtz play as a false nine? For me, Alexander Isak is the player on everyone’s mind and would be the perfect addition up front.

“He’d be a superb signing, but I can’t see Newcastle letting him go, and if they did, it would be for a huge fee. I don’t know what the club’s plans are, but they need to get something sorted before the start of the season."

Newcastle will only feel pressure to sell if Isak himself agitates for a move

Again, it all comes down to the fact that the only pressure on Newcastle to sell Isak this summer would come from the player himself. The club's finances are fine, and Isak has another three years on his current deal.

Talks are reportedly ongoing about a new deal, too, and while this Liverpool interest plays right into his hands when it comes to negotiating a better deal, there have been no indications that Isak will push to leave St James' Park.

The question isn't so much 'Will Isak be at Newcastle next season?' as 'Who will be playing alongside Isak at Newcastle next season?'.
