It has been a while since we last saw anything linking Newcastle United with a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin - but just when you thought it was safe...
We've never been fans of the idea of bringing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle but it's a rumour that never seems to go away.
Almost every report linking us with a move for the Callum Wilson regen has spoken about how Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the forward, which is likely why the rumours won't just die off.
Like Wilson, Calvert-Lewin can be pretty lethal in front of goal, but getting him to string a series of games together without crumbling like a shortbread biscuit is the main challenge.
It appears, this time, that the rumours are coming from the player's side. The Chronicle has reported that Calvert-Lewin's representatives have reached out to Newcastle to see if they would be interested in the forward this summer after being linked with a move for the striker in each of the past four or five windows.
Newcastle have been linked with quite a few strikers ahead of the summer with pretty much all of them looking like a better option than Calvert-Lewin.
When you look at his overall stats, he does look like an appealing prospect, but the man has had more droughts than the entire continent of Africa, going 19 games without a goal at one point last season, ironically ending his drought at St James' Park with an 88th-minute penalty to grab a draw for Everton. This season, he went on another streak of 16 games without a goal, too.
Calvert-Lewin hasn't played since January as he recovers from yet another injury, and even though he won't cost Newcastle anything to acquire in the summer as his Everton contract expires at the end of the season, his £100,000-a-week wage demands should be enough to make us look the other way.
Perhaps he's worth that on a pay-as-you-play deal, but we absolutely cannot substitute one injury-prone player with another, it's absolute madness.
Let's just hope that Newcastle kindly told DCL's reps to look elsewhere and that we have moved on from the idea completely.
