Newcastle United spent an extraordinary amount of time trying to convince Crystal Palace to part ways with Marc Guehi this summer ultimately coming away empty handed.

It was seen as a huge failure by the club after Newcastle kept bending to Palace's demands, ultimately going from an initial £55 million bid to one touching £70 million only for Palace to reject the bid.

It left Newcastle chiefs red faced and desperate with little time to bring any first-team signing in before the transfer deadline.

Guehi had become the club's priority after missing out on another Crystal Palace player Michael Olise who went to Bayern Munich.

Anthony Elanga is still on Newcastle's radar

Newcastle insiders are baffled by reports linking the Magpies with Marc Guehi again

On Monday it was suggested that Newcastle would try and captialise on boardroom tensions at Crystal Palace and go back with a low-ball offer for Marc Guehi in January but now Chris Waugh has rubbished those claims in his Q&A with fans for The Athletic.

"No definitive plans are yet in place for January — reports suggesting Newcastle expect to get Guehi for a knockdown price in January have caused puzzlement among some inside the club — but right wing certainly looks to be a priority."

Right wing was the priority at the start of the summer, clearly, with Michael Olise being the priority target before things shifted to Guehi, and with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman expected back from injury in the new year, the need for a central defender is no longer as great.

Newcastle are still keen on Anthony Elanga

Chris Waugh has suggested that Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga still remains of interest to Newcastle, but also says that Paul Mitchell will be sure to cast a wider net to find the right-winger that Newcastle have needed for several transfer windows now.

Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron can not be faulted for their effort, but their quality is sadly lacking and Newcastle have needed a top-class winger to balance out the forward line with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes doing the job down the left.

Newcastle tried to sign Anthony Elanga on deadline day but Nottingham Forest wouldn't be moved. The Sweden star has not had the best starts to the season with no goals and only one assist so far, so hopefully Mitchell can find some other candidates who could potentially hit the ground running at Newcastle.
