Joelinton set to feature against Brentford on Wednesday despite picking up fifth booking on Saturday

Newcastle United are in Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night as Brentford come to St James' Park.

The Magpies have had several players walking the suspension tightrope lately on four yellow cards, a fifth booking before the 19th game of the season would mean an automatic one-game suspension.

Sandro Tonali, Fabian Schar and Joelinton went into Saturday's game on four bookings a piece and it was the Brazilian who collected his fifth of the season and now faces a one-match ban.

Thankfully, suspensions for yellow cards accumulated in the Premier League don't apply to Carabao Cup games, which means Joelinton will be available for Wedneday's game but will miss Ipswich on Saturday.

Eddie Howe told Joelinton not to get booked two minutes before he went and did just that

Eddie Howe revealed to the media (via The Chronicle) that he had a conversation with Joelinton on the touchline on Saturday warning him not to get booked right before he went and clattered James Justin and picked up a yellow card.

“It's bizarre how things work, I was on the side with him saying Joey don't get booked and he's like 'don't worry, I won't' then two minutes later he gets booked so you just couldn't make it up but sometimes these things happen.

“I'm disappointed to lose him because he's the type of player we need in every away game. He's such a wholehearted player so at least he can play free and play his normal game.”

Sean Longstaff will miss the game on Wednesday

While the rules allow Joelinton to play on Wednesday, fellow midfielder Sean Longstaff will be forced to miss out after picking up two yellow cards in the Carabao Cup already which results in a one-game ban in that competition.

It seems odd that a ban for accumulating five yellow cards in the League doesn't carry into the League Cup, especially when we all remember that Nick Pope had to miss the Carabao Cup final after being sent off in the Premier League against Liverpool heading into the final.

Still, we'd much rather have Joelinton available for Brentford to help us progress in the cup. We're sure we can manage against Ipswich without him. Hopefully.
