Joelinton knew he'd been in a game on Wednesday night despite only playing 45 minutes for Newcastle United as they dumped Brentford out of the Carabao Cup.

The clash at St James' Park was to be Joelinton's last game before serving a one-match ban for yellow card accumulation. The ban didn't apply to the Carabao Cup so Joelinton was able to play the midweek fixture and is set to miss the trip to Ipswich on Saturday.

After what happened last night, though, Joelinton may be glad he's got the weekend off to recover after taking an elbow to the face and then having his head landed on by a Brentford player.

No foul was given for the elbow and the boot to the face was purely accidental. However, Joelinton ended up having staples in his face after receiving a cut to his ear and a bust lip.

Eddie Howe praised Joe Willock for filling the gap left by Joelinton

The Brazilian played out the rest of the half but Joe Willock took over in the second half. Eddie Howe spoke after the game and confirmed that Joelinton had been sent for treatment on the cut to his ear before going on to praise Joe Willock for stepping up.

"Joey had a cut to his ear. Which I think was quite nasty. So he had to go off and get that looked at.

"I thought Joe Willock looked bright when he came on today, so that’s a big plus for him. Sven (Botman) is not too far away, and hopefully that can be added competition for the centre-back positions."

Joelinton spent time in hospital last night to get his stitches checked

The Chronicle notes how Joelinton wasn't present for the obligatory team photo after the game as he'd been sent for a check-up.

Joey should be available after his suspension to take on Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

The game against Ipswich will be the first game Joelinton hasn't featured in all season. How will the lads cope without him? Hopefully Joe Willock will be full of running like he was last night.
