Jason Tindall told reporters on Friday morning that Eddie Howe had missed a couple of days of training with an illness, saying the gaffer was 'very poorly'.

As a result, Jason Tindall and the Newcastle United coaching staff had to step up to fill the void left by Eddie Howe in training and ultimately in the St James' Park dugout on Sunday as they guided the Magpies to a superb 4-1 victory over Manchester United.

Tindall confirmed after the game that Eddie Howe had been watching from his hospital bed after being admitted on Friday evening, and said that the gaffer had sent a congratulatory message to the staff.

He also added that he was hopeful that Howe would be back in the hot seat for the game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, but an update from the club this evening has now ruled that out.
