If you take out free transfers, you aren't likely to find a player who has given any Premier League side more value for money than £3 million man Fabian Schar has for Newcastle United.

While the former Switzerland international has been at Newcastle since 2018, his true bang-for-your-buckness (what? that's a thing!) has really only come since Eddie Howe took over.

Signed by Rafa Benitez, Fabian Schar was a decent defender with an eye for goal, and then he went back over under Steve Bruce, like so many of his teammates, and even became a forgotten figure under the Baconator.

However, Eddie Howe noticed his potential immediately, reinstated him to the first-team, grew his confidence and now, despite the odd lapse in concentration and Category 1 assault on Ben Brereton-Diaz, which almost hospitalised the Chilean and ended his career on the opening game of the season, we'd be knackered without the handsome swine.

Fabian Schar loves working for Eddie Howe

Now, speaking to Swiss outlet, NZZ, Schar has spoken about his love of Eddie Howe and the difference he has made to his career.

“It is extremely important that I feel the manager’s affection and that I enjoy his trust. I felt that 100 per cent with Eddie Howe from day one.

“It has made me a better player over the past few years. He knows me very well, both as a player and as a person. He knows what I can offer a team. He makes that possible.

“The manager [Eddie Howe] understands how to incorporate the individual strengths of each player into our game. For me, that is [also] opening up the game, which he encourages. If I never scored a goal, he would tell me to stop.

“I have always been a dangerous player in front of goal. The attacking mindset is part of my game. I am more likely to look for a finish than a cross.”

Newcastle United for life for Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar recently signed a new contract to keep him at St James' Park and it seems that the 33-year-old doesn't want to be anywhere else.

“When I extended my contract [in April 2025], I couldn’t imagine another club. I am a player who appreciates what I have.

“I would like to play football for another two or three years and so I am not thinking about retiring just yet.”
