Newcastle United were forced to play two thirds of Saturday's game against Southampton a man down after Fabian Schar was sent off.

The dismissal of Fabian Schar was the main talking point from the game despite ten-man Newcastle holding out for a 1-0 win at St James' Park.

Ben Brereton Diaz's behaviour has come in for a lot of criticism after the Chilean winger went to ground like he'd been hit by a sniper's bullet when he and Fabian Schar butted heads.

Both players leaned their heads into one another but it was Brereton Diaz who opted to drop like a stone and successfully conned the referee into producing a red card for Fabian Schar.

Graeme Souness says Brereton Diaz should have seen red

Speaking on TalkSPORT with Jim White and Simon Jordan this afternoon, former Newcastle boss Graeme Souness said he would have liked to have seen the referee Craig Pawson review the incident on the VAR screen and give Brereton Diaz the red card and Schar the yellow.

"Diaz cheated. Schar's wrong, but I personally think that the referee should go to the screen, look at it and send Diaz off and book Schar. You're cheating.

"Schar put his head towards him, there's no action of headbutting, he's gone there he's gone 'come on then', there's no action of 'I'm going to try and hurt you', and for me Diaz throwing himself to the ground, that is a red card. He's trying to deceive me, he's trying to cheat the people that are in the stadium and the wider audience watching on the television. Here's your red card, see ya son.

"You've got to stamp it out because that is the thing that frustrated the supporters more than anything else."

Ally McCoist also had a take on Brereton Diaz

Both Souness and Jordan condemn Brereton Diaz's behaviour which echoes the sentiments of another TalkSPORT host, Ally McCoist who called his behaviour embarrassing.

"I can understand why the referee sent him off, right? Brereton Diaz was shocking, absolutely shocking. I find that embarrassing. All he's doing there is attempting, and unfortunately succeeding, in getting a fellow professional sent off."

There doesn't seem to be any who feel that Brereton Diaz did himself any favours with his behaviour, that's for sure.
