The biggest moment of the match as Newcastle United faced Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday evening was undoubtedly Jordan Pickford saving Anthony Gordon's penalty.
Saving a penalty and earning your side a draw is always a big moment, but when you're a die-hard Sunderland fan saving a Newcastle United penalty by a player who acrimoniously left the club you now play for, then yeah, it's understandable why they celebrated that more than their goal which was eventually ruled out.
Jordan Pickford always gets a lot of stick when the Toon Army are around, and similarly Anthony Gordon gets plenty of hate when he returns to Goodison, so the fact that the two players faced off from 12 yards on Saturday was going to be headline grabbing material for one of them.
Unfortunately for Newcastle it was the England 'keeper who came out on top.
The outcome obviously delighted the Everton fans, but now one former Everton employee has come out and said that perhaps Newcastle were robbed.
Former Everton scout Bryan King has told Goodison News that he believes the penalty should have been retaken.
“I’m surprised nobody said that he went too early.
“He moved far too early, it should have been retaken. Gordon is an ex-Everton player, they’ve been together for England. It was a big decision from Newcastle to allow him to take the penalty.
“Gordon was trying to concentrate, he was looking at the ball and had Pickford dancing around five yards away from him before going back on his goalline.
“I think he got psyched out a bit, it was a poor penalty. I can’t understand why Newcastle allowed Gordon to step forward in that situation, it was not a good decision.
“However, I’m not jumping up and down about Pickford, I thought he went too early and it should have been retaken.”
Referee Craig Pawson had been fairly kind to Newcastle all game, but not kind enough to penalise Pickford for coming off his line too early, however, there were no real claims from the Newcastle players that Pickford had done anything wrong.
It is what it is. In a game where Everton had a goal disallowed and a penalty not given, it would have been hilarious to have their penalty save overturned too, but we can't have everything.
Still, it's fun seeing people connected with Everton saying that Newcastle were robbed.
