Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon received his first call-up to the senior England team for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

Gordon guided the England U21s to European Championship glory last summer, picking up the Player of the Tournament award along the way. He's then gone on to be Newcastle's star player this season, making himself practically indispensable to Eddie Howe.

Many would argue that his first senior call-up should have come before now, but Gareth Southgate finally saw sense and called up the £45million signing from Everton for his penultimate squad before he picks who he takes to Germany for Euro 2024.

Gordon will now have to impress Gareth Southgate over the coming days and then maintain his form for Newcastle to try and book his place on that plane in the summer.

Anthony Gordon was with the best possible person when he found out about his England call

Sky Sports released a clip this morning of Anthony Gordon talking to the media where he spoke about getting the call-up.

"It's hard to describe really you know, you chase this goal for your whole life, your whole football career and you finally get it. It just means everything to me.

"Yeah, I found out through a text and when I got the text I was so happy. I found out just before I went out to training and I'm sorry to say, but training just didn't matter that day. It played on my mind all day."

Gordon was then asked if he told his teammates straight away and as fate transpired, he was already with the best person he could have been with when he got the message.

"Tripps [Kieran Trippier] was next to me. So, the perfect person to be next to me and I showed him. He was buzzing for me."

Saturday could see Gordon up against Bruno

There is nobody better at Newcastle to give Gordon the advice he needs to ensure he maximises his call-up than Kieran Trippier. The 46-times-capped defender has all the experience and knowledge that you could possibly ask for to call upon.

England face Brazil on Saturday at 7pm which means we could see Anthony Gordon go up against teammate Bruno Guimaraes.

I'm not usually that bothered about England friendlies, but this one has a certain Newcastle flavour to it that has piqued my interest. Let's hope AG10 is given a chance to shine.
