Things could have been much different for Newcastle United in Carabao Cup final two seasons ago and the Magpies could have had veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster between the sticks.
Newcastle had a goalkeeper injury crisis in that season which saw them draft in former Liverpool 'keeper Loris Karius on a short-term deal, but before that agreement was reached, Newcastle reached out to recently-retired Ben Foster. Karius ended up in goal at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final after Nick Pope was suspended. That could have been Ben Foster.
Now better known as a podcaster, Ben Foster represented many clubs over his career including Manchester United and Watford. He also picked up eight caps for England.
Foster did come out of retirement after almost joining Newcastle, which he spoke about on his podcast about how close he came to signing. Foster linked up with former club Wrexham to help Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get their side promoted before hanging up his gloves once more.
On the latest episode of The Football Fill-In, Foster was asked whether he believes Alexander Isak could play in any team in the Premier League.
“Look at him, like physically, he doesn’t look like he’s that big, does he?
“He looks a bit skinny, if anything, but he puts it about as well and his work rate is incredible. He doesn’t shy out from a tackle, he’s happy getting on the end of balls into the box with headers.
“And yeah, I reckon he could, I think he could play for any team in the Premier League.”
We all know fine well that he could get into any side in the Premier League, even Manchester City, but having him and Erling Haaland would just break football.
Isak is linked almost daily with a move to Arsenal or Chelsea and glowing references like this are only going to fuel those stories.
For now though, Isak is a Newcastle player and all signs indicate that he's happy on Tyneside, even if his representatives aren't.
