Ever since we realised what a massive talent we had on our hands at Newcastle United when Bruno Guimaraes arrived, fans have lived in fear, stoked by the media, that a 'bigger club' would swoop in and take him away from us.
The Brazilian midfielder, along with Kieran Trippier, was the first huge star to arrive at St James' Park under the PIF regime and it took a long time for the media to accept that Newcastle weren't buying these players to ultimately sell for a profit, but to build a team around to become a force in the Premier League.
So it was a while before the persistent rumours about Bruno Guimaraes going elsewhere tailed off. They never truly went away, nor do we expect them to, but there is a realisation dawning on the media, in the UK at least, that Newcastle's stars are just that - Newcastle's stars!
Bruno Guimaraes has often spoken about his love for the club and the area, and moved to reassure fans at every opportunity that he's not going anywhere, but now, in an interview with FourFourTwo, he has spoken about leaving the club and what it would take for that to happen.
The Newcastle captain said he is living the dream at Newcastle. In an interview with Sky Sports this week, he once again spoke about his kids being Geordies. The man absolutely loves it here, but nothing lasts forever, and he is aware of this, as he told FourFourTwo when they asked about Pep Guardiola's admiration and whether he could pull him away from Newcastle.
“I’m very much at home and living a dream.
“For me to leave, it must be something great for the club, not for me.
“I don’t worry about it – I trust the club and my agents. I’m so happy here and I want to stay.
“I’ve spoken with him [Pep Guardiola], but nothing about a potential move.
“He has said some nice things about my game, and I am very humbled by that because he is the best coach I’ve ever seen – I admire how he has impacted football.”
To be honest, we wouldn't expect Pep to be so sly as to try and tap up one of our players. The man is far too classy for that, and he seems to genuinely have a lot of love for Newcastle and, indeed, Bruno Guimaraes.
We can't see Bruno moving to another Premier League club when the time does come for him to move on, but we love that Bruno is willing to stay for as long as we want him.
Guimaraes has spoken about his dream of playing for Barcelona, and that may happen at some point, but the longer he stays at Newcastle, the less that dream seems to matter.
