Anthony Gordon is sitting on top of the world right now after scoring his second gold for England last night, which set them on their way to a 5-0 win and qualification for next year's World Cup.

It was a fantastic all-round performance by the Newcastle United winger, who played last night amid a backdrop of stories revealing that the £45 million winger has a release clause in his contract.

A report from iNews on Tuesday revealed that the contract Anthony Gordon signed last year does contain a release clause, which is worrying, given how big clubs have been circling recently.

Liverpool had turned Gordon's head last summer, and as a result, his form dipped dramatically last season. However, that didn't seem to put off Arsenal, who were linked with a move for him in the summer.

Anthony Gordon is going nowhere soon

Arsenal were keen on Anthony Gordon this summer

Thankfully, Arsenal didn't test Newcastle's resolve or cough up what is required to activate the release clause, which is still a mystery but is expected to be somewhere close to the same as the £100 million clause inserted into Bruno Guimaraes' latest deal.

Now that it's become public knowledge that the clause exists, Fabrizio Romano has been asked if Gordon is likely to be snapped up by another club, but the transfer specialist moved to reassure Newcastle fans via Give Me Sport's newsletter.

“Many clubs admire Gordon but there’s nothing at all ongoing now, full focus on Newcastle. 100%.”

Anthony Gordon needs a good season to earn his World Cup place

That focus is going to be required all season for Gordon, with a place in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad up for grabs next year.

We might even go as far as to say that Gordon owes Newcastle a good season to make up for the last campaign, where his head was clearly elsewhere.

We all know just how good Gordon can be, but we wouldn't say no to a nice, timely reminder.
