The FA Cup third round draw took place this evening, with Premier League sides entering the draw.

There were plenty of lower and non-league sides in the draw for Newcastle to be drawn against, so hopes were high of a nice, easy tie for Eddie Howe's men.

While Newcastle have often done well in the Carabao Cup under Eddie Howe, having reached the final twice and winning it once, they haven't fared quite as well in the FA Cup.

Indeed, one of Eddie Howe's first games in charge was overseeing a 1-0 defeat to Cambridge Town in the FA Cup third round.

It's a tough start for Newcastle in the FA Cup

Newcastle handed a tricky home fixture in the FA Cup third round

We're sure that Howe would have loved a draw against a team of a similar standing to Cambridge this time around.

However, the Magpies were drawn at home against Premier League opposition, and it was none other than Howe's former team, Bournemouth.

Newcastle's record against Bournemouth under Howe isn't exactly the best, but we have done better against them at St James' Park than down at the Vitality, so at least there's that.

The tie is set to take place early in January

The third round fixtures are set to be played over the weekend of 10th January, with dates and times to be confirmed in due course.

Our friends down the road also picked up Premier League opposition in their third-round tie, drawing away against Everton. So it's the Scouse Mackems versus the Actual Mackems. What a joy.
