Last week, it was reported that Newcastle United were among a few clubs that had been offered the chance to sign former Barcelona man Oscar Mingueza this month.

Celta Vigo are keen to sell the versatile defender in January rather than lose him for free when his contract expires at the end of the season.

It was believed that an offer of around £8 million would have been enough to strike up a deal with Celta Vigo for the 26-year-old.

Mingueza can play all across the back, though his preferred position is centre-back. With so many injuries right now, Migueza would be an ideal low-cost signing for Eddie Howe.

Fabrizio Romano believes Oscar Mingueza is heading to Juventus

It looks as though Newcastle will miss out on this particular bargain, however, with Fabrizio Romano claiming today that Juventus are keen to tie up a deal.

"Oscar Mingueza and Juventus, deal on"

It hasn't quite got his 'Here we go' stamp on it yet, though, so Newcastle, or indeed one of the other clubs offered the chance to sign the Spaniard, could still pipe up.

Newcastle are missing an open goal if they don't go for Oscar Mingueza

Aston Villa were also thought to be interested in Mingueza, and we thought that's where he'd end up, but it looks as though he's Italy-bound.

Newcastle are really dawdling this month when it comes to transfers, which is frustrating a lot of fans. The Magpies haven't been at their best all season, and we've felt that fresh faces could spark some life into the side.

Additionally, the current injury crisis is causing chaos with the team selection, combined with the sheer number of games the team are playing in quick succession, bodies are definitely needed and signing someone so experienced and versatile for so little just seems like an open goal. If he doesn't work out, we could easily move him on for more than we're likely to pay for him.
