Paul Mitchell is grabbing all the headlines on this dark and dreary Sunday.

Earlier we shot down a report suggesting that Paul Mitchell could walk away from Newcastle United after just two months in the job.

In that piece, we mentioned that he had ruffled some feathers with his recent comments and what we were referring to, was of course, his statement that the transfer strategy when he arrived at the club was "not fit for purpose".

It seems that his predecessor Dan Ashworth hasn't taken that comment lightly as The Telegraph reports that Ashworth is unhappy with the comments.

Paul Mitchell wasn't exactly wrong with what he said

The report also goes on to say that those who remain at the club who were involved in Ashworth's strategy are proud of the work they've done.

And to be fair, they absolutely should be. Newcastle had recruited well up until this summer, however, it's not exactly a secret that they overspent and it caused a big issue with PSR this summer.

It's obviously not ideal to see the new guy come in and point the finger of blame back at you, but the comments Mitchell made weren't unfounded, just maybe came across a bit more harshly than he intended.

Mitchell's criticism was aimed at the last two windows which were failures

And again, in Mitchell's defence, he only criticised the last two windows, and in those windows, we signed nobody in January, and only Lloyd Kelly who directly improved the first-team in the summer, so again, he's not wrong.

As for Dan Ashworth taking offence, does anybody actually care what he thinks anymore? He bailed as soon as he could.

Mitchell has got some work to do to convince Newcastle fans of his prowess, and the next two windows will be huge for him in doing that, but as for his comments to the media? They'll be forgotten as soon as football returns next week.
