By all accounts, it sounds like Newcastle United and Crystal Palace could finally come to an agreement over the sale of England defender Marc Guehi.

The saga of this deal has stretched on for weeks and has seen Newcastle have four bids rejected as they fail to offer the £70 million valuation that Crystal Palace have attached to Guehi.

News broke last night that Newcastle's next official bid is likely to be accepted and the deal could be completed within 48 hours.

It's cutting it fine before the close of the transfer window at 11pm on Friday, but at least it now looks as though it's getting done.

Newcastle must act fast to get Guehi over the line

Crystal Palace could cup-tie Marc Guehi tonight

That being said, Newcastle may want to act fast and get that "official" bid in quickly as Crystal Palace take on Norwich tonight in the Carabao Cup and as we've seen, if Guehi is still a Palace player, then they're damn sure going to play him.

If there's no agreement in place before tonight then Oliver Glasner could select his captain to face Norwich which will mean that the 24-year-old would be cup-tied in the Carabao Cup should he move to Newcastle.

Of course, that won't be an issue if Newcastle don't progress tomorrow night by beating Nottingham Forest, but it could still be a cruel last act of defiance by Palace.

Crystal Palace have clearly won this transfer battle

We keep saying that Palace have played a blinder with this deal, they've managed to drag it out until almost the end of the transfer window, they've got two extra games out of a player who looked likely to leave before the season started and they look set to get Newcastle to over-pay for a player.

Even if Newcastle come away with Marc Guehi this week, they've still lost this battle as Palace have played us like a fiddle.

With a bit of luck, Guehi will return with Newcastle to Selhurst Park and nod home a last-minute winner later in the season. That would even things up.
