There wasn't a player on the pitch for Newcastle United on Sunday who didn't deserve their one personal praise as they made Liverpool look absolutely lost.

You could say that Liverpool didn't turn up, and that's fine, but nobody can deny that Newcastle deserved that win on Sunday afternoon.

Indeed, one thing that has really impressed us since we won is the outpouring of congratulations from fans of rival teams including Liverpool fans and even Sunderland fans.

Social media has been full of heartfelt congratulations from fans of all teams, but seeing Liverpool fans admit they were second best and that they were happy for Newcastle was actually a surprising touch.

Arne Slot was very humble in defeat and didn't make excuses for his side's loss

The fans must have taken a leaf from manager Arne Slot's book who was equally humble in the wake of defeat during his press conference. The Dutchman reserved special praise for Dan Burn for his outstanding headed goal, saying he'd never seen anything like it before.

“Again, credit to Newcastle. But I can explain. We play zonal so we have five players zonally close to our goal, so if the ball falls there it is always one of the five stronger players that are going to attack that ball. And we have three players that man-mark and Macca [Alexis Mac Allilster] is one of them.

“Normally a player like Dan Burn or another one runs to the zone because normally… I think he’s an exception to that because I have never seen in my life a player from that far away heading a ball with so much force into the far corner.

“That is part of logic, that they either have to go far away from our zone, which 99 out of 100 times that will never lead to a goal, or they have to arrive in our zone and then it’s an equal battle, if you want to call it like this.

“So credit to him, I think he’s one of the few players that can score a goal from that distance with his head.”

Dan Burn could now pick up his first England cap this week

Dan Burn's powerful header defied physics; nobody should be scoring with a header from that distance, and that's probably what caught out Liverpool's goalkeeper Caiomhin Kelleher.

It was definitely a goal worthy of a cup final and by a player who deserved, perhaps more than anybody, to score it.

We really hope that Dan Burn can get his first England cap over the weekend. After this game, we'd hate to see him reduced to watching from the sidelines, Tino Livramento style.
