Remember Garang Kuol? The Australian wonderkid who became one of the youngest players to play in a World Cup before joining Newcastle United?

The career of 20-year-old Australian Garang Kuol has not really gone according to plan since his switch to Newcastle.

Initially, there were complications regarding whether or not he'd be eligible for a work permit before he joined with the understanding that he'd have to be loaned out to play in Europe to accrue the points necessary to be granted a work permit, but his appearances at the Qatar World Cup made that a moot point.

A loan move was still going to be inevitable, but instead of sending him to the continent, Newcastle sent him to Hearts in the Scottish Premier League which proved to be a disastrous move with the youngster afforded very little game time.

Chris Waugh says Newcastle need to send Garang Kuol out to Europe again

Last season wasn't much better with Kuol sent off to Dutch Eredivisie strugglers FC Volendam where he made 15 league appearances scoring once and assisting once.

In the summer, Kuol was likely to be loaned out yet again, but an injury kept him on Tyneside where it has all gone a bit quiet.

Now Chris Waugh has mentioned Kuol in his latest Q&A for The Athletic when asked about players going out on loan this month.

"Garang Kuol, too, desperately needs a loan, potentially to somewhere in Europe, having failed to secure a move during the off-season due to an injury."

Do we admit that Newcastle got this one wrong and move on?

We're almost half way through the transfer window now and this is the first time we've seen Kuol mentioned, and even now, there's no actual news about the next steps.

Could it be time to cut our losses and admit we got this one wrong and listen to any offers that may come in?

The brief glimpses we've seen of Kuol in a Newcastle shirt haven't exactly inspired confidence, and the common denominator in his two poor loan spells is Kuol himself. It may be time to chalk it up as a learning experience and send him on his way.
