Newcastle United had as many goals ruled out as they had counted on Boxing Day at St James' Park as they beat Aston Villa 3-0.

While Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Joelinton all found their names on the scoresheet, Joelinton and Isak both had goals ruled out as did Bruno Guimaraes.

It was a game that deserved a higher scoreline with Emi Martinez making some top-class saves and Jacob Murphy hitting the bar as well.

While Isak and Joelinton's goals were ruled out for clear reasons, there has been some confusion as to why Bruno's goal was ruled out after Ezri Konsa's clearance hit Bruno and went in (via Lucas Digne's leg by the way).

The rule is daft, but the referee did get it right

The rule is that if a goal is scored via the hand/arm of a player, regardless of intent, it will be chalked off, and the ball did strike Bruno's elbow, although there was absolutely nothing he could do about it, the letter of the law was applied.

Bruno admitted after the game on social media that he wasn't happy that his goal was ruled out but went on to praise the display of the lads, especially Anthony Gordon for his opening goal.

"What a game!!! What a performance by our team. We remain strong in pursuit of our goal. Sad that my goal was disallowed; I couldn’t have done anything differently. What a screamer, @anthonygordon. Proud of my teammates. Thank you for your support, NUFC fans! 🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣"

Bruno was absolutely fantastic for Newcastle again

Bruno was immense again yesterday, his pass through to Jacob Murphy to set up Alexander Isak's goal was absolutely stunning.

He and Sandro Tonali in their new roles with Joelinton supporting, has to be one of, if not the best midfields in the league right now. All three were involved in Gordon's opener, too, just showing how well they are all working together.

It's a good time to be a Toon fan again!
