As expected, Sandro Tonali's comments have been completely twisted by Italian media as report suggests Newcastle United man is desperate to return home
We saw this one coming a mile off, as soon as we saw the quotes from Sandro Tonali refusing to rule out a return to Italy in the future, that the Italian media would find a way to make it sound like he's trying to engineer a way back to Serie A.
Yesterday, we ran a story saying how Italian journalists are likely to twist Tonali's words, and today, that's exactly what they've done.
The Newcastle United midfielder has not been allowed to fully settle in England because there's always a story suggesting that he's homesick or that Juventus or AC Milan are ready to bring him back home.
This has been going on literally since he first touched down at Newcastle airport, and despite Tonali saying he's happy at Newcastle and enjoying playing in the Premier League, the Italian media insist he's miserable.,
Italian media are just making stuff up now
Today, Gazzetta dello Sport have taken what Tonali recently said, which was, "I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country. Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle," and spun that into suggesting he's homesick.
Their report talks about how he ‘misses his beloved Italian surroundings' and has a desire to ‘breathe a more homely atmosphere’.
That's pure projection by the press there, as Tonali certainly hasn't said these things. At least not publicly.
Journalists are a weird bunch
We fully understand why the Italian press would want Tonali to return home; he's one of their favourite sons. It's very similar to how our press can't stop talking about Harry Kane returning to the Premier League, but we don't understand why journalists would go out of their way to unsettle players.
At the end of the day, both Kane and Tonali are still representing their country at international level, so it's in that country's best interest that the players are happy and playing at their best.
Constant speculation isn't likely to create a positive atmosphere for them. Cut it out.
