Last season Newcastle United were handed tricky draws in every cup competition and that tradition has continued again this season.

Entering the competition at the second round stage this season after failing to secure European football last season, Newcastle were given the number 15 ball.

The round two draw was split between North and South with the mixed draw commencing from round three.

Fans hoping for another cup tie against the Mackems were left disappointed last night as Preston North End knocked Sunderland out of the cup in the first round.

No derby for Newcastle but another away day beckons

Middlesbrough demolished Leeds United before the draw was made with Leeds opting for former Magpie Karl Darlow in goal who proceeded to concede three goals.

It's not quite a derby, but it's as close as we could have got, but it wasn't meant to be.

As is now tradition, Newcastle were drawn as the away side with a trip to The City Ground on the cards to face fellow Premier League side, Nottingham Forest.

Sandro Tonali will miss out on making his return by a matter of hours

The ties are set to take place in week commencing 26th August which falls between the Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur Premier League games.

Sandro Tonali will miss out on returning for the Carabao Cup by about a day as his 10-month ban is officially completed on 29th August.

It's a tricky start for Newcastle, but we should have enough to get beyond Forest but as far as omens go, an away draw against a top-flight team isn't the best one.
