It's injury update Monday because this is Newcastle United and we can't get through a weekend without another player being consigned to the treatment room.

Anthony Gordon was the latest player to withdraw from a game through injury against Luton on Saturday, after Alexander Isak did the same on Tuesday in the win against Aston Villa.

Alexander Isak's injury is said to be a reoccurrence of the groin problem that has plagued him all season and despite Jason Tindall suggesting on Friday that he could be in contention to be in the squad to face Luton, the Swede was nowhere to be seen when the team sheet was released.

Isak wasn't as close to a return as we thought

It has since been reported in The Chronicle that Isak now faces at least another two games out with the injury meaning he will miss the games against Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.

Fingers crossed for good news on Gordon today

Meanwhile, news is awaited on the extent of Anthony Gordon's injury after the winger was spotted leaving St James' Park on crutches and wearing a moon boot.

A photo appeared on social media of Anthony Gordon meeting a fan out in the wild yesterday and the caption reported that he was walking fine, but given that he wasn't holding a copy of that day's newspaper, we have no way of knowing when the photo was taken - although it does give us some hope.

Rumours have started circulating online that Gordon is fine and in training today, we'll wait for official confirmation before we get carried away.

This season is now about survival

Alexander Isak's injury now means that Callum Wilson will be forced to play more football so there's a high likelihood that he will pick up another injury around the time Isak is due to return, and the merry dance continues.

That might sound like a cynical view but it is based on fact.

This season started off full of promise about what we could do to build off last season, but it has become a game of survival. It's a case of getting to the end of the season with as many players in one piece as possible so we can rebuild them in the summer, or scrap them for parts.
