Former Newcastle United youth coach Lee Clark is eager to return to Tyneside following the departure of Ben Dawson after 10 years at the club.

The club announced that Dawson had left the club to pursue a first-team coaching opportunity at newly promoted Leicester City with their head coach Steve Cooper a keen admirer of the 43-year-old.

Dawson bowed out of the club in style by managing the under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League and winning the Northumberland Senior Cup at St James' Park in May.

Now Clark, a former Newcastle player and coach has thrown his name into the hat for the vacant position.

Lee Clark's experience is impressive amid Newcastle links

According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Clark is interested in returning to the club to take the vacant role. He has a track record of developing younger talents.

The 51-year-old became a first-team coach under Glenn Roeder as well as the reserve manager. He followed Roeder to Norwich and had stints as manager of Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City and Blackpool.

More locally, Clark had a stint at Blyth Spartans between 2019 and 2020 and spent time overseeing the youth setup at Newcastle Blue Star in 2020.

His son, Bobby was a part of Newcastle's academy before leaving to join Liverpool in 2021.

Jack Ross also considered for the under-21's role

Former Sunderland manager Jack Ross is the current head of academy coaching at the Magpies but according to Hope, Ross is being considered for an interim managerial role until a permanent manager is appointed.

Hope also reported that Ross was being considered for a wider and more senior role earlier in the year, possibly the sporting director role.

New sporting director Paul Mitchell has his work cut out for him with Newcastle also in need of an under-18s coach following the departure of Graeme Carrick to link up with his brother Michael at Middlesbrough.
