Former Manchester United star and England international Paul Scholes has said that Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is "the most capable" option for the vacant England job.
Howe has been linked with the role since the departure of Gareth Southgate earlier this month.
The Three Lions failed to win the European Championships despite a second successive final appearance.
Last week while at a training camp in Germany with the squad, Howe reiterated his eagerness to stay at the club despite interest saying that his love for Newcastle was "unwavering"
Talking to Sky Sports, the former Manchester United captain said: “A lot of people would agree that it would be Eddie Howe (as new England head coach) at this minute,”
“He’s doing a great job at Newcastle, he’s a fantastic coach. He’s doing a great job at Newcastle, he’s a fantastic coach.
"Can he take them to that next level? I don’t know. But I think he’s most likely to be most capable.”
Scholes also mentioned Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola as a potential option for the Three Lions. There is speculation that the Spaniard may leave the Citizens at the end of the 2024/25 season to pursue a career in international management.
As well as Howe, there have been several names linked to the England job.
Former Chelsea bosses Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettinoand Thomas Tuchel have all been linked with the role.
England under-21's manager Lee Carsley is also a likely candidate alongside Howe, Jurgen Klopp, Frank Lampard and Guardiola.
The FA have given until August 2 for applicants to register their interest in the role.
